Dear Sir/Madam,
Our Leleka Maternity Hospital is going through tough times due to the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine and its consequences.
Leleka Maternity Hospital was open in November 2016 and very quickly became one of the leading obstetric hospitals in Ukraine. This was proved by awards, professionals and becoming the first hospital in the country receiving JCI accreditation (Joint Commission International Accreditation – one the most prestigious hospital accreditations in the world).
As you know, Russia launched its war on Ukraine and its attack on democracy on February 24, 2022. This war abruptly changed life in Ukraine including us Leleka Maternity Hospital.
The place where storks deliver babies turned into a front-line military hospital for wounded soldiers. During the full-scale invasion, the lives of military personnel were saved in this medical facility, which was geographically closer to the hostilities in the Kyiv region (Kyiv, Obolonsky district – near BUCHA, GOSTOMEL and IRPIN). Doctors continue to support and care pregnant women and women in labor, who stayed here at the beginning of the war, and in addition, a significant part of the staff also began to treat wounded civilians and military personnel.
We did not stop working, and in the period from February 24, 2022 through April 1, 2022 doctors in our clinic had delivered 26 babies. At the same time, from the beginning of war we provided medical care for over 200 wounded civilians and over 600 wounded soldiers. All this time till the Russian troops retreat we have functioned as a front-line military hospital. Our activity was even shown by media – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhF3h9YNV4E.
As a revenge for providing medical help to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russians fired missiles and damaged our hospital, and to ensure the safety of the staff and our patients, Leleka Maternity Hospital was forced to close.
Until February 24, we provided free medical services for over UAH 1 million to soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including surgery, ambulatory services, and diagnostics. Aaccording to the charitable initiative from Leleka Maternity Hospital, military women who serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine or wives or family members of those who serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, can observe their pregnancy and have the right to give birth in Leleka Maternity Hospital free of charge.
We were not able to receive any help from the Government or anybody to make partial reconstruction of our hospital. Therefore, we did our best to make the most needed reconstruction works in order to launch the hospital on September 1, 2022. We were able to partially reopen the hospital and continue to provide high quality healthcare according to the world standards despite the war in Ukraine.
Why do we need donations now?
Economic situation in Ukraine worsened a lot as the war started. Ukrainian currency and the prices of our services depreciated, at the same time bills for medicine, electricity and heating increased several times. Unfortunately, the number of requests for help from our patients, that we receive, are much more than our opportunities. Therefore, additional donations will allow us to make high quality health care services of our hospital more accessible for the Ukrainian citizens and continue to provide medical care to those affected by the war (Buchan community).
We need to finish the reconstruction of the building, including air ventilation and conditioning systems and the façade of the building. It was damaged and needs to be repaired in order to save the building for the future.
In October-November, missile attacks targeted a lot the electrical supply systems of Ukraine. Since we have only one electrical generator, it is not enough to provide uninterrupted power supply used for important medical equipment. The risks in case of the long blackout is life of our patients, especially newborns.
We are sure that Ukraine will win in this terrible war. We are working hard and all our staff could be example of fortitude of Ukrainians. We need help now and we ask you for the help. Any amount of donation would be highly appreciated. We are ready to provide all the necessary documents and photos confirming the damage. We will publish a photo report with the collected funds.
